CLIMATE: Situated
in the tropics, the climate is as such hot and humid.
The seawater is just as warm with an average temperature
of 20ºC and is very calm. Surrounding most of the
island is a coral reef. At low tide you are able to
walk out to the reef in certain places. Below is a summary
of the seasons and best times to visit:
July – October: During this period, there is little
rain, the average temperature is 25ºC and the humidity
is low. Light breezes at night provide some relief from
the hot days. Not as many tourists as in January, so
for somebody who likes a bit of privacy, it is ideal.
November – March: Are good months although the
short rains come at this time and it is very hot and
humid. Added to this is the Muslim festival of Ramadhan
in December/January, which see Muslims fasting during
the daytime for an entire month. This festival moves
back a couple of days every year, so be sure to check
here again if you plan on going to Zanzibar a couple
of years down the line. Some local restaurants, bars
and discos are closed during this period. All resort
and accommodation entertainment is still open though.
If you are planning to go to a resort, this is a fantastic
time.
April – June: This is the quiet season. The long
monsoon rains pour down. It does not rain the whole
day every day, but you will have to remain indoors for
some time when they come down. If you are on a budget
trip, then this is the best time in terms of price unfortunately.
Many resorts are closed though during this period, so
you will have a smaller selection of places to stay.

DHOW PALACE HOTEL
OFFICIAL CATEGORY (MINISTRY OF
TOURISM CLASSIFICATION): 3***
LOCATION: This
small yet luxurious hotel is situated in the heart of
Zanzibar's historic Stone Town, where East meets West.
The hotel lounge has an impressive selection of antique
ornaments and furniture, and adds to the relaxed ambience
that is a Dhow Palace trademark. Centrally situated
down a side alley off Kenyatta Road in the Shangani
district of Stone Town. The airport is a 10-minute drive
away. If you’re arriving by boat it’s a
10-minute walk.
DESCRIPTION:
The Dhow Palace, with its Arabian archways, authentic
Zanzibari antiques and ornate ornaments, was originally
an Omani mansion dating back to the 1870s. It is certainly
one of the better budget hotels in Stone Town.
A beautiful hand-carved door studded with
brass knobs welcomes you into the modest reception area.
A central courtyard with a water fountain, makuti-thatch
chairs and palm fronds provides a deliciously cool haven
in the heat of the day. The atmosphere inside this hotel
is tranquil and relaxed which is a welcome relief from
the hustle and bustle of the Stone Town streets.
NUMBER OF ROOMS:
The 17 bedrooms.
ROOM DÉCOR:
Tastefully furnished with Zanzibari antiques and Persian
carpets.
ROOM AMENITIES:
Some rooms have traditional four-poster beds with painted
headboards, others have brass beds. Balconies in the
rooms overlook an attractive courtyard with palms and
creepers. You have the convenience of an air conditioner,
television, telephone, mini-bar and hairdryer.
The en-suite bathrooms are interesting,
with blue tiled sunken stone baths which have hand-held
showers (similar to the characterful ones at Emerson
and Green).
SPECIAL FEATURE:
There is no swimming pool here, but you're welcome to
walk down the road to Tembo House, which has a large
pool. Tembo and Dhow Palace are owned by the same group
who follow the Muslim code of not serving alcohol.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES
The new rooftop restaurant is certainly an uplifting
place to have breakfast ... there's nothing better than
sitting above the tin roofs of town and watching the
fishing dhows sailing home. The rooftop terrace here
is second only to that at Emerson and Green. This is
one of the abiding memories of staying in Stonetown
and if you are thinking that you might prefer to stay
at a slightly cheaper hotel, then our advice is to spend
the extra if only to have a rooftop breakfast.
As stated at earlier, the Dhow Palace is really a bed
and breakfast hotel, so although this upper terrace
remains a nice place to retire with a book in the afternoon,
you would probably be best advised to go out to eat
... and not just because they don't serve alcohol.
