DESCRIPTION:
Greystroke is a luxury tented camp located under the
forest canopy right on the beach. The tents are large
and airy. The camp is small but has real charisma and
manages to combine great style and fun with a serious
and ecologically sound approach to operating - no unnecessary
concrete or generators, and all structures built of
biodegradable materials. It's staffed by a small crew
of highly motivated Tongwe people - the local tribe.
They're incredibly good at what they do, so although
this is actually quite a simple camp with basic, but
spacious safari tents, it is suffused with a seductive
natural opulence and you want for absolutely nothing.
Ultimately, the camp is as much of an experience as
the chimps. Greystoke endeavours to leave only footprints
in this perfect world of Mahale Mountains National Park.
Greystoke has beauty, style and great hospitality, but
no shops, no concrete and no plastic.
NUMBER OF ROOMS:
The accommodation at Greystoke Camp is in tents. 6 tents
set up under the palms at the back of the beach. These
are simple pale canvas walk-in tents set at the back
of the beach, some 50 yards to the water's edge under
the shade of oil palm trees
ROOM AMENITIES:
Behind each tent is a magnificent private bathroom.
These aren't attached to the tent, but set a short distance
away (about 3 metres). These bathrooms are very stylishly
built wooden and thatched structures. There are flush
lavatories and showers with hot water on demand, heated
by the stove in the kitchen.
ROOM DÉCOR:
The tents are all either doubles or twins with comfortable
beds, sheets and warm blankets. Behind each bed there
is a small bed-side table with a lamp for reading. In
front of the tents are a couple of deck chairs under
a shady veranda and a table on which your early morning
tea or coffee is left.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
- It has one of the most beautiful and dramatic locations
of any camp in East Africa, sitting on a white sandy
beach at the base of the 8000 ft Mahale Mountains overlooking
the turquoise waters of Lake Tanganyika, the chimps
are simply fascinating!!
FOOD AND BEVERAGE FACILITIES:.
The mess at Greystoke Camp, built by the inspirational
bush architect Ben Jackson, is a triumph of biodegradable
design. From the outside it looks rather like a large
haystack, but once you get inside you see the genius
of the design. It's cool, there are great views of the
lake and it's incredibly stylish with a unique atmosphere.
There's a large central space with a dining table on
a wooden plinth. Around this are three separate wings,
housing drinks, serving tables and some really unusual
books on most topics from natural history to ancient
history. The building is open on all sides, so you get
the best combination of shade and visibility. Above
the dining area is a minstrel's gallery accessed by
a ladder. On the gallery are further ladders taking
you up to small raised platforms with cushions and wonderful
views of the lake, where you can easily while away the
afternoon after a hectic morning with the chimps
