Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro. The twin summits Batian and Nelion requires technical climbing on rock or ice, while point Lenana, the third highest peak standing at 4985 meters is reached by mountain hikers quite easily.
mount Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa and stands somewhat unjustly in the shadow of it's taller neighbour Kilimanjaro, which lies some 320km away in the south and is visible on a clear day. Kilimanjaro may see much more traffic than mount Kenya due to the possibility of summitting via several non technical trekking routes and due to the sometimes dubious honour of being one of the Seven Summits but Mount Kenya offers a wealth of excellent and diverse climbing possibilities on rock, snow and ice.

The rock on Mount Kenya can be of variable quality but is at it's best high on the mountain where the syenite rock is similar to granite rough, hard and well endowed with features.
Apart from the superb climbing potential on Mount Kenya, its tarns and alpine meadows; exotic, equatorial, high altitude vegetation; sunbirds, hyrax and soaring eagles make the walk around the peaks one of the most beautiful expeditions in the East African mountains.

After the cultivated farmlands on the lower slopes the trails pass through the rain forest, rich in trees of many species but noticeably camphors, then onto a bamboo zone growing to heights of more than 12m or more up through open moor land before reaching the moonscape of higher slopes. The forests are rich in wildlife including elephant, buffalo and monkeys with even the moor lands offering a long list of mammals including the rock hyrax, the nearest living relative of the elephant.

Mt. Kenya is an ancient volcanic mountain much older than Mt. Kilimanjaro. It's believed to have once reached well above 600m. What is left today is volcanic plug which erosion has fashioned into the complex jagged outline of the central peaks.

To the ancient Kikuyu and Kamba tribe members viewing Mount Kenya from a distance, the ricks and glaciers that form the peaks, resembled the black and white plumage of a male ostrich. The kikuyu named the mountain "Kirinyaga" that means "the area of the ostrich". The Kamba people have a slightly different accent and pronounce Kirinyaga as "Kiinyaa".
As the Kamba were the first people the European explorers encountered, their version became the one used by the early explorers and so the mountain became Mount Kenya.

Mt. Kenya Treks - 5 Days CTSM 111

Day 1 Nairobi – Nanyuki
Depart in the morning to Nanyuki town situated on the equator and nestling on the foot of Mt. Kenya. Nanyuki you will proceed for an acclimatization walk in where among the places you will visit the equatorial line, Mau Mau caves (hiding place for the freedom fighters) and the Burguret water falls. In the late evening you will return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2 Nanyuki – Sirimon Park Gate – Old Moses Camp
After breakfast you will drive to Sirimon Park Gate and on completion of park formalities you will walk for around 3 hours to Old Moses Camp Dinner and overnight will be at your camp.

Day 3 Old Moses Camp – Shiptons Hut
After breakfast you will proceed to Shiptons camp (4,200 meters). Lunch will be served en route. This should be a 5 – 7 hour walk depending on your individual fitness. Dinner and overnight will be at the Shiptons Hut.

Day 4 Shiptons Hut – Point Lenana – Old Moses Camp
You will take in the early to attempt point Lenana at 0200 Hrs. weather permitting you will be able to see sunrise and even Mt. Kilimanjaro. You will then descend to Shiptons for breakfast before commencing you trek to the Old Moses camp with picnic lunch en route. Dinner and overnight will be at the Old Moses camp.

Day 5 Old Moses Camp – Nairobi
After breakfast you will connect your transport back to Nairobi with lunch in Nanyuki. Arrival in Nairobi is in the late afternoon.

5 Days Mount Kenya Trek, Sirimon - Naro Moru CTSM 112

At this high elevation Mount Kenya climbing enthusaiasts have a fine view of the scenery of forest moorland and the sight of glaciers at the equator is quite spectacular. As you trek on Mount Kenya you will meet with colobus monkey, elephant or buffalo. This walk on Mount Kenya takes you up the mountain via the Sirimon route with unforgettable scenes of the diverse vegetation. You will also touch ice and snow on the equator!

Day 1: Nanyuki
In the morning we leave Nairobi for Mount Kenya driving north accompanied by our mountain guide. After a drive of two and a half-hours we arrive in Nanyuki where we spend the night in one of the lodges at the foot of Mt. Kenya acclimatizing .

Day 2: Sirimon track
A short drive in the morning will take us to the Sirimon track. We start our trek up Mt Kenya and walk to Old Moses Camp (5 hours walk). Overnight at old Moses Camp (3,400m).

Day 3: Mackinder's Valley
Our hike on Mount Kenya takes us via Mackinder's Valley to Shipton's Camp (5 hours walk). Night at Shipton's Camp (4,200m).

Day 4: Point Lenana
Early in the morning we climb Point Lenana (4,985m) .On a very clear day we should be able to see Mt.Kilimanjaro in the South. From the top we walk down to the Meteorological Station (6-7 hours walk). Night at the bandas at the Met. Station.

Day 5: Nairobi
After a morning walk we depart for Nairobi where we arrive late afternoon.

This route has the most gradual ascent to Point Lenana, Minimum 5 days trekking.This is one of the best routes

DAY 1: Nairobi-Nanyuki - Sirimon gate to Judmaier camp
Transfer from Nairobi is at 09:00 hrs to Nanyuki . Stop at the EQUATOR for short while then proceed to Nanyuki for early lunch. drive to Sirimon Park gate and trek for 3 - 4 hours to Old Moses Camp (Judmeier) through a beautiful forest with East African Pencil Cedar trees, Poducarpus trees and the giant Hygenia trees. From Judmeier camp you can see the summits of Batian andNelion peaks: 9kms

Day 2: Old Moses (Judmaier) camp to Shiptons camp
This is about a 6 - 8 hour hike crossing Liki and Mackinders valleys, there is a great view of Tereri and Sendeo peaks. And also a great view of Nanyuki town and beautiful terrain. Shipton's camp has also an excellent setting with the north faces of Nelion peak and Batian peak. 13kms

Day 3: Shipton's camp to Point Lenana and then descend to Mintos Camp (Halls Tarns camp).
This hike is about 4 and half hours hike through some of the most spectacular sceneries like Gorges valley the Halls Tarns and the Lake Elies at a far distance. Overnight at Mintos Campisite.

Day 4: Mintos (Halls tarns camp) to Meru Mt.Kenya Lodge (Bandas)
This hike is anywhere between 4 - 6 hours. This area has spectacular views down into the Gorges valley with Lake Michaelson and Vivienne falls, and across on the other side you can see Ithanguni peak, Rotundu peaks and the Giant Flat -- top Kilingo hill table. 18kms

Day 5: Chogoria gate to Chogoria town
You will walk about 6 - 8 hours, on dirt roads through a thick bamboo forest and tropical forest. The forest is really beautiful with chances of seeing wildlife and Columbus monkeys. You will be transferred to chogoria with a 4x4 vehicle to catch your safari tour van to drive to sweet waters tented camp arriving late afternoon. Check in at the hotel to drop your bags and straight away go to the first game drive in this wild life sanctuary coming back to the camp at 6:30pm. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

Day 6: sweet waters tented camp – Nairobi
Morning and game-viewing sessions tracking the rare, animal's species which can only be seen north of the equator; these are: the reticulated giraffe, the gerenuk or giraffe-gazelle and beisa oryx. You will have a lunch and leisure break in the mid afternoon before you start driving back to Nairobi arriving in the evening. You will either be droped at the air port or at the hotel of your choice.

You can opt for carnivore restaurant dinner for game meat-Price is 60 USD per person!!
